We are required to calibrate our surface plates for our ISO certification and were wondering how often other comanies calibrate these. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We currently have 2 plates that we have had for about 25 years and over this time frame have continued to increase the time between calibrations based on the trends from past calibrations and on the frequency of use. Initially we had these plates calibrated on a 3 year schedule, based on the findings of the calibrations and the frequency of use, after about 10 years of use we increase the time span to 5 years and are currently at a time span of 10 years. Concerning ISO we have had conversations with our ISO auditors concerning the length of time between calibrations but utilizing our internal inspection records, show frequency of use, and the data from past calibrations we have been able to justify this schedule.

We calibrated all of our plates on an annual basis.  Some of them have little wear during a year's time, but the additional cost per plate is minimal once the supplier has all of his equipment setup at our facility.
