In these difficult economic times, I was wondering if anyone is experiencing increased employee turnover amongst your unskilled work force (such as press operators, material handlers etc.) and if so, what steps or programs you have undertaken to help to reduce this?

We are seeing a great deal of turnover at our facility presently.  We believe it is due to our 7 day schedule that requires workers to work every other weekend and also because of the 12 hour shifts.  We have tried an internal referral bonus for referrals that stay 6 months or more.  We have increased our payrates.  We have gone to full time trainers for new employees and worked with a new training program that emphasizes the importance of the operator role in our success.  We are still working at uncovering other issues that may be linked to the issue.

WE utilize a program we call 30 for 40.  Our production employees work 30 hours per week and receive 40 hours pay. They work 6 hours per day without breaks or lunch.  This program fits well ito many peoples lifestyle needs.  They in effect work part time for full time pay.  The benefit to us is that we have a larger pool of unskilled workers that need this type work schedule. We do not have to compete with the typical entry level job.

Let me know if you would like more detail.

This year we have experienced virtually no voluntary turnover.  Even most of the casual labor through temporary staffing services want to stay.
